AFAR is a science-fiction and fantasy project exploring alternate worlds, universes, civilizations, creatures, cultures, and speculative histories.
Emerald Archipelago
Emerald Archipelago is an alternate-world setting inspired by Indonesia and the Indonesian archipelago. It is not Earth or modern-day Indonesia, but a fictional counterpart existing within a larger multiverse.
At first glance, the Emerald Archipelago may resemble Indonesia through its tropical landscapes, island geography, cultural influences, folklore, and maritime character. However, its history, geography, civilizations, creatures, and other aspects of reality can differ significantly from those of our world.
The setting serves as a multiversal counterpart to Indonesia, allowing familiar cultural and natural elements to be reimagined within a different reality.
The name Emerald Archipelago evolved from the earlier concept of Marood, whose name was derived from Marakata (Sanskrit) and Zamrood (Arabic), both associated with the meaning “emerald.”
Daquine
Daquine, the name derived from the combination of “Kuda” (Indonesian for horse) and “Equine,” is a planet inhabited predominantly by horse-like humanoids. Their civilization has a deep connection with horses and the qualities often associated with them, such as strength, agility, endurance, and grace.
Although equine beings form the dominant civilization of Daquine, they are not the only forms of life on the planet. Daquine is home to a diverse range of animals, birds, fish, insects, and other living creatures, each with their own distinct forms and ecological roles. The diversity of its wildlife helps make Daquine a living world rather than a planet populated solely by variations of its dominant species.
The society of Daquine encompasses several important traditions and professions, including warriors, healers, and scholars. Warriors represent strength and protection, while healers devote themselves to restoration and well-being. Scholars pursue knowledge, history, and understanding. Together, these traditions create a civilization that seeks to balance physical strength, healing, and intellectual wisdom.
The relationship between these different roles can shape many aspects of Daquine's history and culture. Conflicts may arise between those who value strength and those who prioritize knowledge or healing, while cooperation between them can become essential to the survival and prosperity of their society.
Rather than focusing solely on warfare, Daquine offers opportunities to explore the broader themes of strength, healing, knowledge, nature, culture, and coexistence. Its equine civilization provides the central cultural identity of the planet, while its diverse wildlife gives the world a broader ecological character.
For now, Daquine's stories remain centered on the planet itself, allowing its geography, civilizations, cultures, wildlife, and history to be explored before expanding beyond its world.
The world belongs to many forms, but civilization belongs primarily to the horse.
