A Fairy tale from German
The Musicians Of Bremen - Script and Song Lyrics
NARRATOR
Once upon a time there was a man who had a donkey. The
donkey had worked hard for years and years carrying heavy
sacks of corn to the mill to be ground into flour. But now he
was getting old, so the man decided that he didn’t want him
anymore and sent him on his way. The poor old donkey began
to walk down the road.
DONKEY
Hee-haw!
Song 1. HEE-HAW CD track 2/6
1 What can I do? Clip, clop.
Where can I go? Clip, clop.
Nobody wants me anymore
So off down the road I go.
Hee-haw.
2 All on my own, clip, clop.
If only I’d known, clip, clop.
I’m not needed, that’s for sure,
So off down the road I go.
Hee-haw.
3 What can I do? Clip, clop.
Where can I go? Clip, clop.
Nobody wants me anymore
So off down the road I go.
Hee-haw, hee-haw, hee-haw, hee-haw.
NARRATOR
After much thought, the donkey decided that he would like to
become a musician. So he set off to the city of Bremen to earn
his living as a singer. After a while, the donkey saw a tired old
dog lying by the side of the road.
DOG
Woof!
DONKEY
Hello old dog, what’s the matter?
DOG
My master doesn’t want me, I’m too old.
DONKEY Come with me and be a musician.
NARRATOR So the donkey and the dog set off together on the road to
Bremen. They had not been walking for long when they saw a
cat curled up on the side of the road. Nobody wanted the poor
old cat anymore because she was too old to catch mice.
CAT
Meow!
DONKEY
Hello old cat, what’s the matter?
CAT
Nobody wants me, I’m too old.
DONKEY
Come with us and be a musician.
NARRATOR
So the donkey, the dog and the cat set off together on the
road to Bremen. Some time later they came to a farm. There
was a loud noise coming from the farmyard.
COCKEREL
Cock-a-doodle-doo!
NARRATOR
An old cockerel was crowing very loudly.
DONKEY
Hello old cockerel, what’s the matter?
COCKEREL
Cock-a-doodle-doo, what am I to do?
The farmer’s going to put me into a stew!
Song 2. OH, COCK-A-DOODLE! CD track 3/7
1 Cock-a-doodle-doo, what can he do?
The farmer’s going to put him into a stew.
Cock-a-doodle-doo, what can he do?
Oh, cock-a-doodle, cock-a-doodle-doo!
2 Cock-a-doodle-doo, can it be true?
The poor old rooster didn’t have a clue.
Cock-a-doodle-doo, can it be true?
Oh, cock-a-doodle, cock-a-doodle-doo!
3 Repeat verse 1
Oh, cock-a-doodle, cock-a-doodle-doo!
DONKEY
Come with us and be a musician.
NARRATOR
So the donkey, the dog, the cat and the cockerel became good
friends and they all set off together on the road to Bremen.
Soon they came to a forest. It was getting dark and they felt
tired and hungry. In the distance they could see a light coming
from a house. As they got nearer, they could see through a
window, and sitting at the table were some robbers eating a
wonderful feast.
Song 3. THE ROBBERS SAT DOWN TO TEA CD track 4/8
1 Deep down far away in the woods,
Underneath the trees a little house stood.
And the robbers, the robbers sat down to tea,
The robbers, the robbers sat down to tea.
2 The big clock in the hall began to chime,
And on the table lay a feast so fine.
And the robbers, the robbers sat down to tea
The robbers, the robbers sat down to tea.
3 The food looked tasty in the candlelight,
A feast fit for a king, what a lovely sight.
And the robbers, the robbers sat down to tea,
The robbers, the robbers sat down to tea.
4 Repeat verse 1
NARRATOR
The four friends were very excited.
ALL FOUR Food!
NARRATOR
They thought for a while. How could they frighten the robbers
away? Then the donkey had a good idea.
DONKEY
Let’s sing really loudly!
Song 4. WE’RE THE MUSICIANS OF BREMEN CD track 5/9
1 We’re the musicians of Bremen,
Music we will bring,
We are fine musicians,
Come and hear us sing.
CHORUS
Hee-haw, hee-haw, hee-haw,
Woof, woof, woof, woof, woof, woof,
Meow, meow, meow,
Cock-a-doodle-doo!
2 We’re the musicians of Bremen,
Here to sing for you,
We can sing so sweetly,
You can join in too.
CHORUS
3 Repeat verse 1
NARRATOR
The robbers had never heard such a terrible noise before. Then
the four animals burst in through the window. The robbers
were so frightened that they jumped up and ran out of the
house and into the forest.
ROBBERS 1/2
Ghosts!
ROBBERS 3/4
Run!
NARRATOR
The donkey, the dog, the cat and the cockerel ate and ate and
ate until they were very full. Then they turned off the light, lay
down and went to sleep. At midnight, the leader of the robbers
ordered one of the other robbers to go back to the house.
ROBBER 1
Go and have a look.
ROBBER 2
OK, I’m not frightened.
NARRATOR
The robber walked slowly up to the house, opened the door
and crept in quietly. He could see the bright eyes of the cat.
He thought that they were the coals still glowing in the fire, so
he decided to light his candle with them. He held the candle
towards the cat and the cat leapt up with a loud hiss. She flew
at the robber and scratched him.
CAT
Hisssssss!
ROBBER 2
Ow!
NARRATOR
The robber was very frightened. He ran to the door, but fell
over the dog. The dog sprang up and bit him hard on the leg.
DOG
Grrrrr!
ROBBER 2
Ow!
NARRATOR
The robber tried to run across the yard, but the donkey gave
him a sharp kick.
DONKEY
Hee-haw!
ROBBER 2
Ow!
NARRATOR
All the noise woke up the cockerel who came flying down,
crowing as loudly as he could.
COCKEREL
Cock-a-doodle-doo!
ROBBER 2
Aargh!
NARRATOR The terrified robber ran back to his friends as fast as he could.
ROBBERS
What happened?
ROBBER 2
A witch scratched me, a man stabbed me, a monster hit me
and a judge shouted at me!
NARRATOR
This made all the robbers very frightened too.
ROBBER 1
Run!
ROBBER 2
Run!
ROBBER 3
Run!
ROBBER 4
RUN!!
NARRATOR
The donkey, the dog, the cat and the cockerel thought it was
all very funny as they watched the robbers run off through the
forest. The robbers never went back to the house again and
the four friends never did get to Bremen because they decided
to stay in the lovely house. Every day they sang and sang and
were happy ever after.
Repeat Song 4
